May is International Menstrual Hygiene Month, and in this special episode, we take you to Matela Village in Kalikot, Nepal. Women who previously had no access to menstrual products are now making their own pads from available cloth at home. These women, who used to be confined to their houses or forced to live in sheds (Chaugoth) during their periods, can now speak freely about menstruation. This transformation is a small but powerful example of the change we hope to see across all communities: dignity and access to menstrual hygiene for every woman.

This Rishi Panchami, how about redefining traditions and empowering ourselves by embracing the strength of our menstruation rather than washing away 'sins''? Rishi Panchami is a Hindu festival celebrated in Nepal to honor and seek forgiveness from the Sapta Rishis (Seven Sages), marked by rituals and reflection on purity and righteousness. Rishi Panchami can be seen as discriminatory against women due to its reinforcement of menstrual taboos, exclusion from religious activities, negative impact on self-esteem, restrictions on daily life, and perpetuation of harmful gender stereotypes.

The recent death of a 16-year-old girl in the Baitadi district of Nepal during menstruation is a disturbing example of Chhaupadi risk. This practice of isolating menstruating individuals has endangered the lives of countless girls and women in western Nepal. Despite the government's criminalization of this practice and the dismantling of the 'chhau goths' or huts the question remains: Why does this practice still exist? Why have we failed to stop it?
